How to swaddle in a blanket for discharge. How to wrap a baby in a blanket: several simple ways. What to do if your child does not sleep under the covers

After the birth of a child, mothers usually have many questions. While in the maternity hospital, nurses help them, but when they are left alone with the baby, all the advice and tips fly out of their heads.

Unfortunately, experienced grandmothers are not always nearby to answer all questions.

In this article we will tell you how to choose the right blanket, what to look for when choosing and how to swaddle a baby in a blanket.

How to wrap a baby in a blanket?

There are several ways that can be useful in different situations. The common goal of all methods is for the baby to be tightly wrapped, neck supported, and confident that he won't come undone.

Let's start with the first option - elegant. They usually swaddle children when they are discharged from the hospital. Feature: the baby is swaddled with his head, and the upper corner can be folded back.

  1. We shoot the blanket at an angle. Usually a square blanket is purchased for newborns, but it can also be rectangular. In this case, the angle on the left should be higher.
  2. Place the child in the center. Immediately make a fold at the top and wrap the left end tightly around the body. Under the back, the blanket should be smooth, without humps. The top fold should end approximately at the level of the navel. We hide the remaining lower end under the fold.
  3. When we wrap the right side, do not forget about the fold. It is smaller than the left one, but required. The resulting side will be a support for the baby's head.

In addition, tie a beautiful ribbon. This method is practical, since the upper corner will not fit tightly to the face.

The second method is similar to the first, since a corner is formed on top, but this time it will not cover the baby’s face.

  1. Place the baby in the middle of the blanket, which is spread with an upward angle. Let's pay attention to the corners on the sides. In a rectangular blanket, the left corner should be larger. The first step is to secure the folds of the top sides of the blanket with your hands. We hold the folds at the level of the shoulders; a pocket is formed on top that will hold the child’s head.
  2. Now let's wrap it up left side and level it under the back. In this method, folds are formed on the inside of the blanket.
  3. Fold the bottom of the blanket up. The angle should not be on the child's face. And we wrap it with the right end. Smooth out under the back.

The final stage is fixation with tape. We place the tape under the child at neck level, just above the shoulders. We cross over the chest and bring it under the bottom to the level of the butt. There we do the same and bring the ribbon to the level of the knees, where we tie a bow.

The third way of swaddling is with an open face. In this case, the child should have a warm hat.

  1. Lay out the blanket with the angle facing up. Turn this corner with the fold outward. Position your baby so that his head rests above the edge of the blanket.
  2. Wrap it in the left corner, straighten it under the back. Fold the bottom corner up. This time, its end should be placed on the left side of the baby, so that the end supports the neck.
  3. Smell the right side tightly. Tie the top with a ribbon.

This way you can also hide your head by leveling the top corner.

Advice! Mothers decide whether to swaddle or not, but doctors recommend doing so, since newborns have poor thermoregulation. They need to maintain the desired temperature for 2-3 weeks.

How to choose a blanket for a child? Primary requirements

When choosing a blanket for newborns, there are several criteria to consider.

  1. What time of year do you need a blanket? Demi-season blankets are not suitable in winter. For this period it is better to buy a separate one. And for the summer you need light flannel, fleece or terry blankets.
  2. Whatever the time of year, all blankets should be thermally conductive and warm.
  3. Synthetic blankets provide good warmth, but the child sweats in them and the moisture does not evaporate. Therefore, when selecting, pay attention to the hygroscopic criterion.
  4. The fabric and filling must be hypoallergenic.
  5. Blankets made from lightweight materials will not squeeze the baby’s body, no matter how tightly you swaddle.
  6. Caring for baby blankets doesn't have to take much time. Easy to wash and no special care using different chemicals. This also needs to be taken into account when choosing.
  7. The size of the blanket is also important. A large blanket will not be convenient for covering the baby or swaddling him. Therefore, the optimal sizes are 80*90, 95*100, 105*115 and 110*140 cm.
  8. You should also know for what period you need the blanket. Many mothers use walking blankets for a short period of time. Then they switch to costumes, and as a rule, the blanket is replaced by capes from the stroller.
  9. What is the purpose of a blanket? Cover the baby or swaddle it.
  10. Last but not least is the smell of the blanket. Manufacturers can save on materials and fillers, which will, as a result, have a strong and unpleasant smell.
  11. The specificity of the room in which the baby sleeps is also important. If the room is 25 degrees, then a duvet is not required. It's better to take something simpler.
  12. Certificate of quality. Be sure to pay attention to the certificate. You can write whatever you want on the packaging. And the presence of a certificate confirms the quality.

It's better to have several blankets on different cases life.

Which blanket is best for a child: warm models

The winter version of blankets differs in filler and density from demi-season ones. Therefore, you need to know the difference in them depending on the type of fabric.

Duvet for baby

This blanket has a number of positive characteristics. It is the warmest, lightest and hygroscopic. If possible, it is better to choose a blanket made from swan or loon down, but this is often not the case. In this case, a quill pen will also work.

There are a number of disadvantages when choosing. Firstly, down tends to become damp. The blanket needs to be dried frequently. Secondly, down can become a haven for down mites. And as you know, mites can become the subject of allergies in a baby. Thirdly, such blankets can be useful in a room with low heating or in the fresh air at a temperature of no more than 16-18 degrees. The reason for this is extreme heat transfer.

Wool blanket for baby

These blankets are made from the wool of various animals. They are also divided into subtypes: quilted, knitted and woven. Wool blankets are distinguished by their lightness, hygroscopicity, and thermal conductivity.

Everything would be fine, but moths love them very much. Therefore, you need to additionally monitor them when they are not needed. When washing, it also requires special care, depending on the wool.

Bamboo blanket for baby

This blanket is easy to care for. It can not be washed, but simply vacuumed or shaken out.

A weightless, soft, hygroscopic and hypoallergenic bamboo blanket has some advantages. Unless manufacturers may choose low-quality material, which will ruin the impression.

Synthetic blanket for baby

Typically, such blankets have silicone, padding polyester, and holofiber fillings. Practical blankets that have a number of advantages:

  • Thermally conductive
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Lungs
  • Wash perfectly
  • It's not moth-eaten

The main disadvantage of such a blanket is that it does not allow moisture to pass through well. If the baby sweats, he will remain wet for a long time.

What clothes to choose for a child: summer models

For the summer, it is better for children to choose light blankets in the form of a blanket or towel. The fabric can be different, the main thing is that it is warm and soft. Below are some options.

  • Flannelette blanket for children. A pleasant-to-touch flannel blanket will be a godsend on a cool summer day. The fabric is simple and easy to care for. Such blankets last a long time and are practical to use.
  • Blanket made of calico and fleece. The blanket is lightweight and also soft to the touch. This blanket can be chosen for good summer weather. When it gets colder, it is better to purchase one with insulation.
  • Terry blanket. An air blanket that allows air to pass through will become indispensable in summer or warm spring.

The above mentioned bedspreads are made of cotton, which is easy to care for. You can also purchase blankets for the summer with removable insulation. When it gets colder, it will also come in handy; you won’t have to spend money on buying a new one.

What to do if the child does not sleep under the covers?

All mothers know that children do not sleep peacefully at night.

They spin, spin, the blanket is at their feet or even on the floor. What to do in such cases?

There are a few tips to help keep your baby warm at night.

  • Buy sleeping bag. It is based on an adult sleeping bag, but there are some differences. Small children need optimal thermoregulation, and for this they need their head and arms to be outside. In addition, adults can sleep all night without changing positions, but children cannot. Children's sleeping bags have enough space for the child to change positions and move while sleeping. There are winter, summer and demi-season bags, and sometimes combined. But remember, the child may not like the bag; you shouldn’t force it into it.
  • There is no way to buy a bag, wear warm pajamas. Nowadays there are all kinds of pajama styles available in the market. It is better to choose pajamas that are heat-resistant and hygroscopic. This will allow the child not to sweat and keep warm.

Important to remember! If a child does not open up and does not wake up, this does not mean that he is cold. A child feels temperature completely differently than an adult. Therefore, if there is no cold, the room is warm enough, then there is no need to panic.

Your baby should be gradually introduced to walking as early as possible. If you swaddle your baby correctly in a blanket and protect him from the wind, he will feel good in the fresh air even at sub-zero temperatures. Thermoregulation in a baby is developed gradually and overheating or hypothermia should not be allowed. Today we'll talk about how to wrap newborns in a blanket for a walk.

Reference! To be sure that the child does not feel uncomfortable, you need to pay attention to his face. If the baby turns pale, it means he is cold; if he turns red, then he is hot.

Why does a newborn cry while walking?

There are several reasons that make a child cry on the street.

  • The child is hungry. In the first weeks after birth, the baby wants to eat often, and the appetite increases during a walk. If he turns his head and smacks his lips, then it’s time to feed the baby.
  • The baby is bored or afraid. Sometimes he cries because he doesn’t see or feel his mother. Then you need to hold him in your arms for a while to comfort him.
  • The baby is tired. A large number of new impressions can tire him. If motion sickness does not help, you should go home. A familiar environment will help him calm down.

  • Baby suffers from colic. At the beginning of life, a child often has colic.
  • It's time to change the diaper. At first, the baby reports discomfort by sobbing, but if you do not react, loud crying will not take long to appear.
  • The child is overheated. In this case, the baby sweats and his face becomes red. Adults often tend to swaddle their babies too warmly. Overheating is very dangerous for a child, so you should not wrap your baby up too much. During a walk, you should sometimes check to see if he is sweating under the blanket.
  • Newborn gets cold while walking. If the baby's face turns pale, and his hands and nose are cold, he is freezing. This may be the result of swaddling too tightly or the wrong choice of blanket.

Reference! A newborn should wear one layer more clothing than an adult in the same weather conditions. The baby's legs, arms and head should never be cold.

Useful video

New parents have a lot to learn. Properly wrap a newborn in a blanket- this is a necessary skill. Will help you understand this process faster video, which is presented below.

We offer three different options for how to properly swaddle a baby in a blanket. In front of you - detailed instructions with step by step photos. Your baby will be warm and comfortable in any situation.

The first option is elegant: how to swaddle a baby when he is discharged from the hospital

What is needed? Of course, so that the baby is comfortable and safe in the arms of an adult during his first trip home. This means that he can be kept in a semi-upright position for a long time without fear that he will unswaddle, bury his face tightly in the blanket, or burp and will not be able to turn around. But the main thing is that, regardless of the ambient temperature, you can look at the baby’s face at any time to assess how he feels. Therefore, you need to wrap your body tightly, support your neck and be able to beautifully fold back the top corner of the blanket in order to maintain the solemnity of the moment.

We’ll demonstrate how to swaddle a baby head-on using a large doll. The blanket should be spread on a corner. If it is shaped like a rectangle, then position it so that the corner on your left is higher than on your right (see photo 1). Place the doll in the center. Wrap the left end of the blanket tightly around the baby's torso, leveling the free edge under the back. Note: you need to immediately make a fold on top so that its fold covers the neck, and the lower end reaches approximately the navel (photo 2). Next, tuck the bottom end of the blanket over the child’s legs, placing it under the fold made earlier (photo 3).

Wrap the right corner of the blanket, tucking it tightly under the back. You also need to make a fold along the top edge (photo 4). This way, a kind of side is formed around the baby’s head, which will provide her with additional support. But the main thing is that it will protect the child from tight fit blankets to the face when it is covered with the upper corner. Additionally, tie the resulting envelope at the top with ribbon (photo 5).

– see “Flower from a diaper for a newborn.”

The second option is swaddling in a thin blanket, like a warm diaper.

We won't repeat ourselves - step by step instructions with detailed description how to swaddle a baby, and photos- look.

The third option is how to swaddle a newborn baby with an open face

Spread the blanket as in the description of the first swaddling method, but turn the top corner with the fold outward. Place the baby on top so that the head rests above the edge of the blanket (photo 1). Wrap its left corner around the baby's torso, leveling it under the back (photo 2). Next, wrap the bottom corner, but do not tuck its free end under the fold, but press it from the side of the baby’s left arm to support their neck (photo 3).

Wrap the resulting structure tightly with the right end of the blanket, leveling its free corner under the back (photo 4). Tie a ribbon at the top (photo 5).

The convenience of this method is that you can quickly cover your head with a blanket if necessary. To do this, just straighten the upper corner folded into the fold on the back.

Nappies are comfortable, soft pieces of fabric widely used instead of clothing for newborns. It is unlikely that anyone can say exactly when their story began. The need to protect, warm, and cherish our descendants is inherent in us by nature itself. This means that diapers appeared not much later than, in fact, man himself. Only at first they were the skins of animals killed during hunting, in which primitive people wrapped their children, then they were made of leather, fur, and burlap. Today they have changed, they have become both more comfortable and attractive. But many alternative options for children's clothing have appeared: rompers and undershirts, overalls, bodysuits, etc. Some parents now do not “wrap” their children at all. And others are of the opinion that it is necessary to swaddle babies, as our mothers and grandmothers did, the mothers of our grandmothers and many generations of women before us. Who is right here? Should modern parents wrap their newborn babies? And if so, how to do it correctly? We tell you everything according to the instructions, step by step, with photos and videos.

The benefits of swaddling a baby

Why is it believed that a newly born baby will feel more comfortable if he is wrapped up, because this limits his freedom of action?

The answer is simple: the diaper to some extent creates the illusion of an enclosed space and somewhat reminds the toddler of his mother’s womb, where he was cozy and warm.

It is best if the child’s body is in contact with a surface that, in the first time after birth, would replace the walls of the amniotic sac, because it is their protection that he has become accustomed to during the nine months of life in his mother’s tummy. This way, the child’s adaptation to a new environment is easier and faster.

Is it necessary to swaddle a baby?

But there is another reason why the procedure is recommended for infants. Their movements are not yet entirely conscious. Newborns do not yet know how to control them. Moreover, the chaotic movements of the arms and legs can even frighten the baby.

Undoubtedly, it is best to be in your mother’s arms, but it won’t work out all the time. In such a situation, this piece of fabric is simply necessary. It retains heat well, guarantees comfort and safety, and yes, it restricts movements, which slow down the process of going to bed and, in fact, only distract and frighten the child. A baby who is swaddled falls asleep faster and sleeps much more soundly.

A big advantage is their low cost - you can make them yourself, and buy them no more than once every three months. You will have to buy rompers, vests and bodysuits much more often, and they cost much more.

Flaws

  • Often newborns have problems with muscle tone, so they need special clothing.
  • If the room is quite warm, the child may overheat because it is difficult for him to maintain a certain body temperature. This is especially true in the summer. In this case, it is necessary to dress the baby lightly, and it is better for him to sleep on his stomach. Diapers definitely won't fit here.
  • Also, compared to, for example, rompers and baby vests, diapers somewhat limit the child’s physical activity. And this prevents the strengthening and development of the muscles of the arms, legs, neck, and abdominals. But you can lay the baby on his tummy before each feeding, do gymnastics with him, don’t wrap him up when he’s awake, and thus compensate for this deficiency.
  • In addition, most dads find it easier to put clothes on their child. Yes and modern mothers, looking at the huge assortment of children's clothes, they simply cannot resist - they buy elegant dresses and comfortable “bodysuits”, increasingly preferring them over the good old fabrics.

When a newborn is calm and happy with everything, eats well, falls asleep easily and sleeps for several hours at a time, then he is unlikely to need these constraining tissues so much. But for babies who are restless, often cry for no apparent reason, or have problems sleeping, it is still better to wrap them in diapers for the first few months after birth.

A little theory

Changing a diaper is quite simple. To do this, prepare in advance:

  • clean cloth (for different types of swaddling, the diaper is folded differently, and there may be more than one);
  • diaper (disposable or reusable);
  • vests, rompers (if you wear them);
  • a basin with warm water or napkins for newborns (you can also wash the baby under running water);
  • remedy for skin irritations - powder, baby cream or special oil.

Remember! Everything you need should be at your fingertips. After all, when you put the baby on the table and undress him, you can’t leave him there unattended and go look for the missing accessories.

  • Before each procedure, be sure to wash the child and dry him gently with a soft towel.
  • If the navel has not yet healed, nothing should squeeze it. When you use diapers, you need to fold back the front edge when changing them.
  • Fabrics must be washed and ironed each time; used fabrics must not be dried.
  • Overheating is dangerous for newborns. Therefore, you need to choose a warm or thin diaper based on the room temperature.
  • Cotton fabrics stretch well and do not hinder movement, flannel fabrics are not so pliable.
  • Do not pull the fabrics too tight. Avoid folds, especially rough ones. Make sure that nothing causes inconvenience to the little one.
  • There is a misconception that a baby should be swaddled with straight legs. Do not do this under any circumstances.
  • A newborn baby is just beginning to explore the world, so he watches your speech and facial expressions. Be as friendly as possible. Talk to your baby while swaddling. Then he will not resist, but will begin to perceive it as a natural procedure.

There are different ways to swaddle a newborn. The use of one method or another depends on age characteristics, need or doctor’s recommendations.

Tight swaddling - step-by-step instructions with photos

With this method, the baby is swaddled completely. It is often used for hyperactive children.

Algorithm of actions

Pediatricians do not recommend resorting to this method during the day, nor do they recommend using undershirts with sleeves sewn up. But you can use it before going to bed at night. A child wrapped in this way will feel calmer and sleep better.

There are two varieties of this method: in the first case, the arms remain on top of the fabric, and in the second, they are swaddled, like the legs.

Loose swaddling is considered more gentle. The position in which the newborn's arms are pressed to the chest and the legs are pressed to the tummy is approximately the same as that he assumed in the womb. This is how the baby will feel comfortable.

Algorithm of actions

If you have any difficulties with swaddling, you can use an envelope. It is much more convenient and does not interfere with the child’s movements.

Wide

This type is prescribed by a doctor for various disorders in the development of the musculoskeletal system. The baby's position should be the most natural - legs bent and slightly moved to the sides.

This swaddling promotes the proper development of the pelvic joints and is a prevention of dislocations and subluxations of the hips, as well as dysplasia in the early stages. The method is applicable to children up to six months old.

Usually in the maternity hospital they show what it means to swaddle a baby widely. You will need three diapers, as well as two vests. Choose clothes according to the season: the main thing is to avoid overheating.

Algorithm of actions

  1. Put on your baby a vest made of thin fabric.
  2. Next, a jacket made of flannel or flannel is put on over the vest.
  3. Place two warm ones on the table, and then a thin diaper on top.
  4. Place the child on the table.
  5. Warm fabric must be folded into a scarf (the edge is on the tummy), and thin fabric is folded in the form of a strip.
  6. Place a thin one between the legs, wrap the legs in it.
  7. The bottom of the thick fabric passes between the legs and is then secured around the tummy.
  8. Place the baby diagonally on the third diaper, wrap the edges behind the back, and tuck the bottom and secure it to one of the top edges.

Swaddling in a blanket

Often in winter, newborns are taken from the maternity hospital wrapped in a warm blanket. And for walks in the cold season, a blanket is not as often as before, but today it is also used. How to properly swaddle a baby in a blanket?

"With your head"

Head outside

In summer and hot weather

Rules for summer:

  • In hot weather, you should not tightly wrap a child suffering from increased muscle tone.
  • Children often develop a fever when swaddling, so in summer it is best to use thin fabrics without vests and rompers.
  • In case of stomach upsets, it is best for the baby to lie on his tummy; in this case, there is no need to swaddle the baby.

Age characteristics

Swaddling helps the newborn baby get used to the new world. This period can last a week, or even a month.

The mother independently determines at what age the baby will be swaddled. By his behavior, she will understand when he is ready to give up tightening. Many people resort to swaddling only at night so that the baby sleeps peacefully.

At the age of two months, the baby can already leave his arms free, and at three months he can completely forget about wrapping. It is best not to use diapers when the baby is awake, because he must learn to control his movements and explore the world.

If parents are categorically against diapers, however, they notice that their baby feels more confident when his movements are somewhat difficult, you can buy a special envelope. But if you have even the slightest doubt about the use of fabrics or an envelope, be sure to consult with the pediatrician who is caring for your child.

Mothers who are soon to give birth to a baby are faced with the question: what should they discharge him from the hospital with, especially if the baby is born in late autumn or winter? Now there are many different ones, but they don’t last long, because the child grows quickly.

The way out of the situation can be a good old blanket, or rather, not old, of course, in the literal sense of the word, but one that has never failed our grandmothers who swaddled the baby for a winter walk. It will be useful both at discharge and during the first year of the baby’s life, and after that it can be used to cover the child at home in winter.

But this seemingly ordinary item confuses some young mothers, because it is not clear how to wrap a child in a blanket correctly, so that he does not unwind during a walk. Let's conduct a short educational program on this issue.

How to wrap a baby in a blanket?

  1. Spread the blanket so that the corner is at the top. It can be tucked inwards and then rolled back to cover your face in severe frost (A).
  2. We cover the baby with one of the corners and if the blanket is not too thick, then its corner can be slightly tucked under the backrest (B).
  3. This part of the blanket, which covers the baby first, covers his arm completely from the neck (C).
  4. The next step is to cover the legs. We bend the bottom corner towards the chest so that it reaches the neck, and fold the excess inward (D).
  5. Now use the remaining free corner to fix the resulting cocoon with the baby (E).
  6. This is how a child should be wrapped in a blanket. You can secure it with a wide tape so that the structure does not fall apart at the most inopportune moment (F).

Well, now we know how to wrap a baby in a blanket.

What types of blankets are there for babies?

The first blanket for wrapping your baby should be small and square in shape. If you buy a rectangular one, you won’t be able to wrap it nicely. The material should be chosen hypoallergenic, natural and lightweight, because synthetics will not retain heat in the cold.

Now there are various modifications of blankets equipped with Velcro for easy fixation and “legs”, in which the baby will be comfortable not only in a stroller, but also in a car seat.

Before wrapping a child in a blanket, to prevent him from sticking his arms out outside and freezing, he should first be swaddled in a thin cotton diaper. So, by pressing the arms and legs tightly to the body, the baby will be warmer, and the fist trying to stick out will not interfere with sleep during a walk.

The question “how to swaddle a newborn” arises before a new mother already in the maternity hospital, when the screaming bundle, solemnly presented by obstetricians, becomes wet after the first feeding. Sometimes doctors themselves reveal the secrets of swaddling, but it is much better to master this science during pregnancy by practicing on dolls or, for example, soft toys.

Why swaddle a baby?

It would seem that the range of hygiene products for children allows you to do without diapers altogether, because there are disposable diapers, big choice clothes of the smallest size and other delights. But you shouldn’t consider classic flannel and cotton diapers a relic of the past, because the need for their use will become acute in the following situations:

Swaddling has a beneficial effect on the development of a newborn's sense of touch. Touching the fabric allows this feeling to develop faster. And if a premature baby is born, the diapers will imitate the mother’s womb, which will definitely benefit the newborn.

Some swaddling options

In this case, the child is wrapped in cloth from head to toe. Such a tight cocoon does not allow the newborn to turn his head and move. The legs in the diaper can be straightened or slightly bent.

The baby is wrapped in a diaper from heels to neck. The shoulders are closed, the arms are pressed tightly to the body, and you can turn your head as much as you like, reacting to your mother’s voice or turning your face to the milk-filled breast.

A cozy “nest” is created from diapers, in which the child can move his arms, legs, and head to a limited extent. Coordination of movements develops and the child becomes familiar with his own capabilities and body.

It is convenient when the baby craves freedom, is not afraid of his hands, and does not flinch. This swaddling allows you to do without disposable diapers - the baby’s feet will not freeze, the skin will breathe, and the beautiful new baby vest will not get dirty if the doll “makes a puddle.”

To find out how, when and for how long to swaddle a newborn, take a closer look at his behavior. Advice from experienced grandmothers or nurses will be of little help here; each baby is individual and unique.

To begin with, it is better to swaddle a newborn completely, with his head, so he will be warm and comfortable. Next, note the child’s reaction to his limbs while washing and changing clothes. Take a closer look at how the baby sleeps more soundly - with only his legs wrapped in fabric or wrapped up from head to toe.

Trembling, frightened screams, and too sudden movements of the hands can cause tight swaddling for several days or even weeks. And if the baby sleeps well in a blouse with sleeves and rompers, then you should not pull him down and enslave him, limit yourself to loose swaddling.

Types of diapers

The following is a table with recommendations for choosing the size of the material. Clarification: warm flannel diapers most often serve as a second layer on top of the first cotton one, so you can purchase or sew them in smaller sizes (for example, 100 x 100 cm).

The size is also affected by the following circumstances:

  • if you sew diapers yourself, then it is more convenient to take the width equal to the width of the fabric roll;
  • When making diapers from sheets (use only new ones), it is more convenient to cut in such a way that the least amount of trim remains or no trim remains at all.

Video – Lesson on swaddling a baby

  1. Take the diaper and lay it out in the shape of a diamond (angle up).
  2. Fold the top corner of the diaper. We place the baby's body on the fabric so that the neck is on the fold of the fabric (Fig. A).
  3. We take the right corner of the diaper in our hand and, holding the newborn’s right hand, place the corner behind the baby’s left side through his left armpit (Fig. B, C).
  4. Hold the baby's left hand. We take the lower corner of the diaper and place it behind the child’s back over his left shoulder (Fig. D).
  5. We wrap the remaining free left corner around the child’s body from left to right, placing the tip behind the back.
  1. Lay out the diaper. Fold the top edge 15-20 cm.
  2. We insert the baby's right arm under the fold.
  3. We place the baby's hand on the tummy and at the same time move the right edge of the canvas over the baby's left side.
  4. We do the same with the left edge of the diaper - insert the left handle under the fold, wrap the left edge over the baby’s right side.
  5. We tuck the bottom edge under the child’s knees.

Swaddling is done without dragging the baby with the cloth. The baby should be wrapped up, but be able to move a little.

Swaddling without handles is free. Method 1

  1. We place the baby on the diaper so that the upper edge passes just below his armpits (Fig. 1).
  2. We spread the baby's arms to the sides. We grab the canvas on the right and bring it behind the child’s back through his left side (Fig. 2).
  3. We repeat the operation with the left edge of the canvas (Fig. 3).
  4. We make sure that the child’s legs lie straight. We take the bottom edge of the diaper and twist it under the baby’s heels (Fig. 4).
  5. “Open” the lower corners of the diaper by pulling them in different directions (Fig. 5).
  6. Place the bottom edge of the diaper on the baby’s tummy (Fig. 6).
  7. We bend the right corner behind the back, then the left. We tuck the tip of the diaper behind the fold on the tummy (Fig. 7-10).

Swaddling without handles. Method 2 – wide

This type of swaddling is suitable for children from birth to three months, and is often used to prevent hip dislocations and treat infant dysplasia. The fabric holds the baby's legs in a half-bent position, with the knees spread in different directions.

For swaddling, a thin square diaper is used (calico, kulirka, etc.). Additionally, you can prepare a hat and thick fabric for the second layer.

Step 1. Spread out the diapers

On a flat, hard surface, first lay down the diaper wrong side up. Fold the diaper diagonally with the wrong side inward. The fold line will pass under the baby's back. The corner should then end up between the baby’s legs.

Place a diaper (gauze or disposable) on the resulting “kerchief”.

Step 2. Wrapping the baby

We put the baby on the diaper. The fold line of the “kerchief” should be below the child’s shoulder blades, in the diaper – located between the legs. We put on a diaper or (as recommended by the doctor) place a fabric folded several times between the child’s knees, which will hold the legs in the correct position.

If you are using a disposable diaper, the front edge with the picture should be folded outward so that it does not cover the umbilical wound.

Free swaddling without handles - method 3

This method is not suitable for babies who have seizures or are afraid of their own hands. You will need a vest and two diapers - the material is selected according to the temperature in the room. We put on the vest in advance.

Step 1. Spread the fabric

We spread the first diaper.

If it is rectangular, then lay it horizontally. Fold the top edge by 10-15 cm.

Place a second diaper on top; similarly, fold the top edge, and it should be 5-10 cm below the top edge of the bottom sheet.

Step 2. Roll up the first layer

At this point, you can place the bottom corner of the fabric between the baby’s knees and heels.

Straighten the folds. We tuck the loose fabric below the child’s legs under his knees.

Step 3. Second layer

We place the lower ends under the knees. We do not straighten the child’s legs and do not restrict movement. We take out the corners of the fabric and tie them on top above the knees.

Rules for swaddling children

When swaddling, do not cover the baby's nose and chin with cloth so as not to impede breathing.

It is important to straighten all the folds of tissue, because the skin of a newly born baby is very delicate and easily injured.

It's important to keep track temperature conditions to prevent the baby from overheating. If the room is cool, it is better to first dress the baby in a vest and rompers, and then swaddle. Or it is permissible to use two diapers - the bottom (first layer) of chintz, the top of flannel.

If the room is hot, you should take a diaper from a drawer or calico, and do not cover your head with anything (recommendation only for full-term babies).

Do not use pins to secure diapers - this can be dangerous.

Nowadays, there are many models of overalls and envelopes for children even of the youngest age. However, the baby grows very quickly and constantly buy new clothes pointless and impractical. Swaddling a baby is necessary for a number of reasons, for example, for a morning walk, a holiday or regular sleep. A hundred years ago, any parent knew how to swaddle a child, but now many mothers have no idea how to wrap a child in a blanket. Moreover, it now exists huge selection bedspreads and not every mother knows how to choose the right blanket for her baby.

If earlier our grandmothers definitely knew the answer to this question, now expert opinions differ. Some believe that it is dangerous for a baby to be restricted in movement while sleeping or walking. Consequences of movement restriction - developmental inhibition or even damage internal organs. However, if you know how to wrap your baby correctly, then you are unlikely to have any problems. It has been proven that such a design reminds the baby of the mother's womb, which gives the child coziness and comfort.

Which blanket to choose for a child?

Before learning how to swaddle a baby, you need to take a responsible approach to choosing a suitable blanket. The fact is that the sensitivity of newborns is higher than the sensitivity of adults, so you need to carefully check that the baby is not allergic to the corresponding fabric. In addition, it is important that the blanket not only retains heat well, but also does not absorb moisture. A special “breathable” fabric is perfect for this. This allows the baby to maintain optimal body temperature and promotes proper, healthy development.

Types of blankets

The main difference between blankets is the fabric from which they are made. The most popular options for children's bedspreads:

  1. Goose down blankets. They are the warmest and most pleasant for the skin. One of the disadvantages is the high price. Not suitable during hot weather, because down retains heat very well;
  2. Wool bedspreads are not inferior to down ones in practicality, however, wool is often the cause of a child’s allergies, so you need to be careful when choosing such products;
  3. Synthetic blankets are the most popular, mainly due to their price. They are not picky about washing conditions, and are also quite durable. They do not cause allergic reactions or other problems, but do not allow air to pass through at all. In such blankets, the baby often sweats, which can lead to a cold. Therefore, care must be taken to ensure that the child does not get hot.

How to swaddle a baby in a blanket?

The most popular wrapping pattern is an envelope. We will tell you step by step how to properly tuck a blanket:

  1. To begin with, you should take a blanket of the appropriate size. Don't forget that a blanket that is too large is not suitable for swaddling babies, just as a blanket that is too small can be pulled too tight. Tuck the upper end of the blanket slightly towards the center (so that the blanket has the shape of an elongated pentagon);
  2. Next, lower the baby on the blanket so that the head is above the folded corner. The body should remain on the blanket, but the head should not touch it. This is very important point after all, if you wrap a child completely in a blanket, there will be practically no air left to breathe;
  3. Holding the baby with your free hand, gently wrap the baby around the body several times. There should be space left, the baby should feel free and not feel discomfort;
  4. The bottom edge of the blanket should not have been used yet. Take it and wrap it around your baby's feet. This will keep not only the upper body warm, but also the legs;
  5. There should have been an unused piece of the bedspread left on one of the edges. Place it behind the child's back, wrapping it again;
  6. Carefully check the space available to the newborn. Pay attention to the baby's reaction; if he is not happy with the design (or experiences inconvenience), you will have to swaddle him. Some children are not suitable for swaddling at all, in which case it is better to avoid it.

The types of swaddling in a rectangular blanket and a blanket with a corner are slightly different. In this case, the process depends on the individual parameters of the blanket. Most likely you will have to make a few additional wraps or tucks of the blanket, but overall this will not change the design. It is important to remember that different blankets have different properties and the wrapping process may be modified depending on these properties.

When swaddling your baby before going for a walk, it is important to pay attention to the time of year. If it’s summer (or a warm off-season), then you don’t have to change the design, because the baby will be comfortable as is.

If the temperature is high, you should stop using a blanket, because the child will be hot. However, if you go for a walk in winter, it is advisable to additionally insulate the structure so that the baby is warm and comfortable enough!

To sum it up, we can say that there is nothing ordinary about the swaddling process. The main thing is to be as careful and attentive as possible so as not to harm the child. And also adapt to circumstances and weather, changing swaddling patterns.
