Amulet dolls in Russia have always occupied a special place, they were considered a symbol of piety and prosperity, they "warmed" the place in the cradle before the birth of the child, and after birth they were hung over the headboard, as a talisman against damage and the evil eye, when the child grew up, he was allowed to take them play.
Our doll will be a symbol of "hospitality" - hearty treats, readiness to host guests, prosperity and well-being. From ancient times in Russia, at the beginning and at the end of dinner, it was advised to eat a piece of bread with salt for happiness. Treating a guest with bread and salt established friendly relations between him and the host. trusting relationship; refusing them was regarded as an insulting gesture.

It was like this: in order not to become enemies,
And under the roof forever keep the world,
Definitely had to with the guests
Bread and salt the owner to share.
And changed hate love,
Joy went against misfortune.
Who tasted bread and salt together,
He could not think of hostility.

Presented to dear guests.

For work we need:
- loaf of salt dough, glue;
- a piece of bleached cotton or linen fabric;
- shreds of colored chintz;
- threads, satin ribbon;
- for stuffing synthetic winterizer or cotton wool.

Our doll is made like everyone else ritual dolls only with good and pure thoughts. According to traditions, scissors and needles cannot be used in the manufacture of any amulet doll: the fabric is only torn and tied with a thread. Also, you can not draw the face of the doll. Our ancestors believed that an evil spirit could enter the doll through the eyes...
Preliminary work:

roll a loaf in the middle from a small amount of salt dough, make a recess with a toothpick, then dry it in the oven. Glue a crystal of coarse salt into the recess.

Let's start making dolls
In the middle of a white patch, approximately 15 x 15 cm in size, we put a tightly rolled piece of cotton wool or padding polyester;

we wrap the stuffing with the center of the patch and tightly rewind it with a thread.

Now we make hands. To do this, we align the opposite, free ends of the fabric, determine the length of the arms.

We tuck a little fabric (corner) inside the sleeve, measure the size of the doll’s hand from the edge and pull the fabric with a thread.

We make the doll's chest from a small colored patch. We also put a tightly rolled piece of stuffing,
we tighten and wrap with a thread and divide it into two parts with the same thread.

Thread the chest to the body.

We turn three colored flaps:

- one diagonally on the scarf;
- two other squares on the skirt.
We wind the skirt to the body under the bust, one square in the back, the other square of fabric in the front.

We make an apron from a small rectangular patch and wrap it over the skirt.

We tie a satin ribbon around the head, wrapping the ends of the ribbon around the body and tying it over the apron.

We tie a scarf on the head.

Glue the loaf to the hands of the doll.

Our amulet doll is ready. Bread and salt for your home.

Charm dolls are gaining popularity every year. This is the answer to the famous foreign Tilda, which can be found in any souvenir shop. But in a Slavic person, charming toys do not evoke such a response as folk amulets. People can deny the ethnic Zhostovo and hate Khokhloma, but at the sight of a motanka, his heart will skip a beat. This is not just a national symbol, but also a memory from childhood. A gift from a caring grandmother who believes in miracles.

    herbalist

    A do-it-yourself herbalist was present in every home. It was given to friends and relatives, saying: "to health." This little doll was designed to protect the family from illness, physical ailment and bad mood. Mothers gave it to their daughters, as they believed that it was a symbol of female wisdom. They even took her with them, going on the road, so that she kept the owner from adversity.

    To make Bereginya herbalist at home, you will need a basic set of materials and two hours of free time. For beginners, it will be useful not to limit yourself in time and completely immerse yourself in the process.

    Necessary materials:

    • Thick cotton fabric, size 30 × 30.
    • Threads and needle.
    • Aromatic herbs for stuffing.
    • Cotton wool.
    • Aromatic oil.
    • Cotton fabric in size 20 × 30 for the manufacture of the torso.
    • Two 10×10 squares of fabric for the chest.
    • Four 10×10 squares for health pouches. Two squares of the same shade.
    • Sea salt.
    • Fabric for the bottom of the apron - two patches of 8 × 10. Each subsequent layer should be smaller.
    • Braid for warriors.
    • Scarf fabric triangle 40 × 20.
    • Soutache for a belt.

    Manufacturing instructions

    To make a skirt, a square measuring 30 × 30 cm is cut out of fabric. It must be folded in half (in half and again in half) and cut off the central corner in an arc to get a circle.

    Stepping back 1–1.5 cm from the edge of the future skirt, the flap is collected on a thread around the circumference. To make the fabric tighten more easily, it is recommended to use linen thread. Thick knots are tied at its ends.

    Now you need to fill the skirt with herbs. The first layer of stuffing is made of cotton wool, the bottom is covered with it in the form of a nest, about 1 cm thick. Then the remaining unfilled space of the skirt is stuffed with herbs. It is recommended to use sage, chamomile, rosemary, eucalyptus, lavender. Or any other based on the preferences of the master. On top of the herbs you need to drip a few drops essential oils without hitting the material. The skirt is ready.

    Now it's the turn of the torso, head and arms. This will require a square. white cotton size 20 × 20 cm. From cotton wool you need to roll a tight ball with a diameter of 3.5-4 cm and put it in the center of the square.

    Then you need to wrap the ball with a cloth so that the face is formed without wrinkles, they should remain on the back of the head. The ends of the fabric are tied with threads at the back.

    On both sides of the head there are tails of fabric, from which the hands of the doll are made. They need to be folded, forming palms, and tied with threads.

    To make the body look denser, and the arms neater, the torso is additionally picked up with threads.

    From red threads, you need to gradually complete the protective cross. The thread should be long enough to complete the pattern on both sides of the product.

    The body must be turned with its back to you. You need to knit a cross starting from the lower right corner. The thread rises to the left shoulder, then wraps around the neck and, rounding the right shoulder, crosses to the lower left corner. Now the thread wraps around the belt so that after turning the doll's face, it remains on the right below. The manipulation is repeated on the other side. A knot is tied at the bottom center of the back.

    For the chest, you will need two squares of fabric measuring 10 × 10 each. A ball of cotton wool is embedded in each of them. Their diameter should not be small, because the Herbalist's chest is a symbol of fertility. Then the wrapped balls are tied with thread, leaving long ends.

    Two balls are tied together.

    The chest is tied to the body so that it touches the chin. The knot is placed on the back, and the remaining ends of the threads are carefully trimmed.

    Gradually collecting the Herbalist, it is important not to forget about the health bags. Since ancient times, it was believed that sea salt takes away the negative from the surrounding space. To make them, you will need 4 squares measuring 10 × 10. One bag should consist of two squares different color.

    A little salt is poured into the square and tied with tight threads.

    It remains to collect the doll. The body is inserted into the center of the grass nest. It is important to install the part so that when the skirt is tightened, the knot is on the back.

    Health bags are attached to the doll's hands.

    It remains to decorate the doll. The apron can be made multi-layered or single-layered. For the bottom layer, you will need an 8 x 10 cm patch. Subsequent layers should be smaller. They need to be collected on a thread and tied under the Herbalist's chest. As a decoration, fringe can be made along the edges of the apron. The knot stays behind.

    Ready-made braid is suitable for warriors, you need to cut off 15 cm, iron and tie around the doll's head. Excess tails are cut off.

    A scarf is tied.

    You can weave the belt yourself or buy a soutache. It is tied from above, but the knot is left on the left, under the heart.

    The amulet toy is ready!

    Wishlist

    Wishlist - a talisman designed to fulfill wishes . The process of creating such a toy is more like meditation. During its creation, you need to concentrate on what you want, thus winding your thoughts on a toy. Using pattern templates will make the process easier for beginners. Such a product will look neater, but does not correspond to traditional technology.

    Necessary materials:

    • Bright dense fabric for the head.
    • White fabric.
    • Multi-colored patches for creating clothes.
    • Strong thread for winding.
    • Colored threads for decoration.
    • Scissors.

    Step-by-step instruction

    Top and bottom of the strip thick fabric should be pressed to the center. Then the strip is wound in the form of a spiral. This is important point. The spiral is a symbol of the connection between generations. Therefore, when making a product using traditional technology, this element cannot be neglected.

    Then the head of the toy is formed, for this the spiral is wrapped in white cloth. The place of the neck is indicated by a tightly wound thread. Its color should correspond to the desire of the master, in order to determine it, you need to turn to your own associations. A prerequisite for the fulfillment of a desire is to wind it in the direction away from you.

    On the face of the doll you need to form a cross. The main red thread is held at the level of the chin and wrapped several times over the top. A horizontal line is drawn on the face of the product, supporting the thread in the same way as in the previous case. The horizontal line symbolizes everyday goals, the vertical line is responsible for spiritual development and three major events in a woman's life: birth, marriage and death. Then, with a thread of a different color, you need to wrap the outline of the cross.

    The roll is fixed on the body of the doll with red threads. You need to tie them crosswise.

    A scarf is formed from a triangle of fabric and wrapped around the head of the Desire. Its ends are fixed with a red thread wrapped around the neck.

    To create a petticoat, you will need a rectangle of fabric of any size. It wraps around the waist of the amulet and is fixed with threads. The next step is to create an apron. It symbolizes female connection with earth. If the craftswoman dreams of a child, the apron needs to be made more authentic. Then you need a rectangle bigger size than the petticoat, they wrap the toy on top, grabbing the apron. The lower patches should be visible in front.

    For the final scarf, you will need a colorful fabric. A triangle is formed and wrapped around the head. It is tied in a knot at the back. The abundance of outfits symbolizes the family.

    The production of the doll has come to an end. If the purpose of creating the Wishful Woman is the birth of a child, you need to additionally form an impromptu baby. A spiral of dense fabric is wound up, as is the case with the head of the Desire. It is wrapped in fabric and fixed with threads on the right side of the doll.

    You need to wind the protective doll of the Desire only during the young moon. The finished toy needs to be decorated with attributes symbolizing desire.

    How to make a charm magical?

    Creating an amulet in the Russian style is, first of all, work with energy. In order for the toy to have power, it must be properly charged. Being engaged in its creation, one should not think about the bad, it is not recommended to watch movies or TV shows that carry negative information.

    The finished product must contain an even number of knots and an odd number of turns. When tying a knot, you need to whisper your desire aloud. And winding the thread, you need to constantly pronounce the wishes of health, happiness, love for yourself and loved ones.

    If the thread is constantly tangled, and the fabric is torn, causing irritation, it is worth postponing the lesson for a while so as not to charge the product with negative energy.

Scraps of multi-colored matter;

Lace;

Sintepon;

Scissors;

Mouline threads (red);

First of all, you should do a "twist". To do this, take a patch cotton fabric 30x40 cm approximately, bend it in half. Next, you need to twist the "column" evenly and tightly. Its height will be 15 cm. We will tie the twist with red threads over the entire height. Then slightly round the head, taking a synthetic winterizer. We mark the neck with threads. Next, take a square of coarse cotton fabric (its size is 20x20). We put it on the head, fasten it along the neck line with a red thread. Now you need to make hands. We turn the corner a centimeter and a half, fold the edges to the middle. From the edge, at a distance of about 1 cm, make a hand for the toy and pull the fabric with a thread. After tying, the threads do not need to be cut. Next we make the waist. Tie tightly with a thread the place where we will have it.

clothing

Let's make a skirt now. To do this, we take a colored flap 12x30 cm. Along the cut from above, you need to make a line and a small gathering. We wrap our doll with a patchwork inside front side, tie tightly at the waist with a thread. Then twist and straighten. Next, we will make an apron from canvas, pulling the threads along the edge. You can embroider some simple pattern for beauty. We place the apron in the center of the skirt, inside with the front side. With the help of a thread, we drag along the waist and then straighten it. Tie a piece of lace around the head. Then you need to make a scarf, for this we cut a triangle out of the fabric and tie it on the head. You will need to tie strings on your hands - after all, there will be more children who will need to be kept. Next we make a baby. First we twist the column from a piece coarse fabric. The size of the flap is 10x7 cm. We twist it tightly and tie it with a red thread. We cut out further a scarf from white fabric and tie it on the head. For a diaper, you need to take a 10x13 cm flap. Gently swaddle, bending the edges inward so that the threads do not stick out. We are also making a second baby. Now we give the children into the hands of the mother. That's how easy it is to create a doll-amulet with your own hands. Let's consider another option further.

Motanka

First, a few words about the meaning of this toy. A charm in the form of this doll was given to a child to play or hung over his bed. Often it was stuffed with fragrant medicinal herbs. With the growing moon, the chrysalis was sentenced to health, good immunity, and when the moon was waning, they ordered getting rid of problems and curing diseases. How was this do-it-yourself charm doll created? A diagram illustrating the process is as follows.

Let's prepare everything you need:

A piece of white or coarse calico), 15x20 centimeters in size (we will make a head out of it);

Colored patches:

  • approximately 18x18 pieces for pens;
  • 15x30 or 35 - for a skirt;
  • 13x5 - for an apron;
  • 15-20 - for the lower handkerchief;
  • a triangle with sides of 22 cm (from it will be the top scarf).

You will also need a bag filled with grass (thyme, wormwood, chamomile, oregano, mint). Its size is approximately 4.5x6 centimeters. To wind the toy, you will need threads (cotton, wool, linen - any), for a cross on the face - colored threads (cotton or floss). Optionally, you can take more lace, braid or any ribbon for decoration.

Create a toy

We wrap the bag and tie it into a rectangle of white fabric. To wind the cross on the face, you need to draw the thread through the head with your right hand vertically, from front to back, fixing the beginning of the thread with your finger. Then it needs to be fixed by wrapping it around the neck. Then we lay out the thread in parallel, winding from back to front. Lay the same thread horizontally. You need to fix it in the same way - around the neck. Then lay out another color, wrapping the head with another thread, parallel to the previous one. It will be beautiful if the threads lie side by side. Next, dress the toy in the bottom scarf. We fix it, wrapping it again with a thread. Next, we will make handles, making a flap several times. It is better to wind them to the doll crosswise. The skirt can be assembled with a needle on a thread, or you can simply attach it to a toy. Then we also fix the apron, knit the top scarf. At the end, we will tie the doll with a belt. This is how dolls-amulets were created before with their own hands. The tutorial in the article shows how easy this process was.

Slavic hand-made amulet dolls have always played a significant role in the lives of people in Russia. In addition to their main purpose - to protect and protect, children played with dolls, they decorated the decoration of the house. Our ancestors were sure that amulet dolls have an impact on the life, health, fate and well-being of people. Therefore, dolls were made as symbols of the rite or guardian hearth, they were often presented as gifts. These dolls were made from various materials, for example, from cloth, leather, clay or straw.

In order to more clearly show what kind of amulets were made for a specific occasion, we will give a few examples.

For holidays associated, for example, with the change of seasons or harvesting, appropriate ritual pupae were made. Each had its own role and its own fate - some were burned, others were kept - stuffed with cereals and placed in the house to attract prosperity.

Lovebird dolls were made for the wedding for the newlyweds, which symbolized the integrity of the family.

If there were no children in the family, but the spouses really wanted to become parents, then they made a doll-amulet for pregnancy - “Moskovka”. It was believed that it symbolizes the spirit of motherhood and family unity.

Even for the speedy birth of a child, women made a “pregnant” doll for themselves. Its peculiarity is that it is an ordinary doll, in the hem of which the doll "Plenashka" is hidden. It was also believed that this amulet removes damage, the evil eye and other troubles from the newborn.

Dolls "Chappies"

Charms "Bunnies" were made for children. They helped the kids not get bored if they had to be left alone.

The doll "Kubyshka" served as a talisman for health. She was supposed to sit on a bag of medicinal herbs. And if someone was sick, it was necessary to go with the doll around the house, rubbing this bag with your fingers, and then put the doll in bed with the sick person in order to expel the spirit of the disease.

For prosperity, they made the Krupenichka doll and the Rich Man doll.

So that the house would not be left without an owner when he left for a long time, a protective doll was necessarily planted in its place.

You can watch a video from the First Museum of Slavic Mythology, which tells about the manufacture of amulets dolls.

There are many other amulet dolls. We get to know each of them in more detail in the article Slavic dolls-amulets made of fabric: their meaning and how to make them with your own hands

Rules for creating protective pupae

And in our time, protective dolls are made. But before you make amulets with your own hands, check out some significant rules!

1. Calm down, concentrate, read a prayer or slander

First, calm down, retire and concentrate on what you will be doing. You must have exclusively good mood and calm state. Turn on some relaxing music or sing along good song. You can also read a prayer, a conspiracy, or just speak out loud for whom and why you are going to make this doll.

For example, when making a Six-handed doll, you can say:
“I make you in order to succeed in all matters and do them well. I turn this handle so that there will always be order, peace and comfort in my house. I turn this handle so that my husband is always well-groomed, fit and happy with everything ... etc. ”

You can twist the head of the doll with your fingers and say:
"Light head, clean, filled with goodness, love."

When breastfeeding a doll, think about happy motherhood so that the family does not need anything.

In general, you can pronounce any text of the slander, the main thing is that it leads to the desired result.

2. Only women can make amulets

During the manufacture of amulets, there should not be men in the room, that is, “male energy”. And if, nevertheless, the presence of boy children is inevitable, then first keep them busy with your own affairs, and then start working with the doll. Boys should not stand nearby and see the process of work!

3. Puppets are made on their knees

Make a charm doll on your knees or, as they said before, “in the hem”, that is, in your personal space. The table is a common place and only the fabric and tools used in the work can be placed on it.

4. Amulets are made from natural materials

To create dolls, take only natural fabrics such as cotton, linen or wool. Do not use knitwear! Fabrics should not have edges or old seams. If you are making a doll for a gift, use new fabric or fabric from old clothes the one to whom you will make the doll. For yourself, take fabric from things that were used by your family.

Mandatory rule: the face of the doll should be white so that no one can transfer evil thoughts to the owner of the amulet through it. Besides, White color symbolizes the purity of thoughts.

5. Do not use a needle and scissors in work

When making shore dolls, do not use needles, knives, glue and scissors. In the old days they said that the doll should be “not cut, not chopped” so as not to harm the health of the one who is being amulet.

Tear the fabric with your hands. If you are making from thick fabric, then first cut the edge of the fabric, and then tear it by hand. Do all the manipulations with the knife and scissors before starting work with the doll. Tie the body for the doll, do not sew.

The only exception is the bag for the Krupenichki-Zernovushki doll, which is sewn on the side.

Moreover, clothes for dolls also need to be made without using a needle. And you can decorate it with lace, embroidery and braid.

Break the threads with your hands or bite with your teeth.

6. Sacred number - 3

When you tie the strings, tie them 3 times. The number 3 has always been magical for the Slavs and they believed that in addition to reliability, 3 knots give reliability to slander, and also serve as protection against any negativity.

7. The doll must be neat and stuffed tightly.

Remember that the amulet doll should be neat and dense. The filler in all parts of the doll's body must be laid in an orderly manner. Make the body especially strong and dense. Roll a twisted doll, for example, with your palm on your knees until it becomes tight.

If something doesn’t work out, the doll is disheveled or falling apart, it’s better to redo it all over again. Do not leave loose threads, divergent ends and disheveled armpits. Be sure to inspect the doll after finishing each detail in order to immediately correct, fasten the thread, and tuck the excess inside. The more accurate the doll, the more protected it is from negative external influences.

If suddenly during the work the thread breaks accidentally or you can’t straighten the fold in any way, say: “Misfortune will come to the doll, and I (or the name of the one to whom the amulet is being made) will bypass.”

8. When creating a talisman, a good message is important

In the process of work, put bright images into the amulet doll - this is much more important than the manufacturing technique. Therefore, it is very important to make amulets only to those to whom you sincerely wish good, to those whom you love! And if you need to make a charm for someone else, then first imbue the image of this person, wish him well, and only then proceed to manufacture.

Master class for beginners - the basis of a thread doll

You will need the following items:

  • Woolen or cotton threads (only natural, not synthetic!)
  • Pieces of colorful fabric, braid, ribbons, beads for decoration - optional
  • A piece of cardboard for winding thread

Please note that when assembling the guarding doll, do not use sharp objects. So scissors, pins, needles are completely out of the question! Therefore, all fabric items (skirt, scarf, apron or other clothing) must be prepared in advance. And we will assemble the product using only our skillful fingers.

Doll amulet - step by step instructions

First of all, decide on the color of the threads from which you will "wind" the amulet. We chose aquamarine threads for this, for hair fit straw-yellow yarn, for bandaging handles - bright pink thread. So let's get started!

Take a piece of cardboard 10-12 centimeters wide, depending on what size your motanka will be. We used the cover of an old wall calendar and folded it in half to make a pretty thick piece of cardboard. Start winding the thread of the selected shade on the cardboard, make about 25-30 skeins. The thicker the yarn, the fewer turns of thread will be required.

When a bundle of sufficient thickness is formed in your opinion, break the thread and fasten its end at the top of the winder, as shown in the photo. It resembles a brush - needlewomen who knit know how to make it. Beginners are advised to make the knot stronger - so that the doll does not fall apart when you remove it from the cardboard.

We remove the yarn from the cardboard. To facilitate the process, slightly bend cardboard base. You should get such a "brush". It is not necessary to cut it from below - remember that scissors cannot be used. After all, this is a protector doll that will protect your home. Let the loops remain, they can be beautifully leveled with your hands.

Take a thread of the same color as the body of the amulet doll. Drag a woolen brush with it as in the photo. Here you can experiment, it is not at all necessary to take a single-color thread, on the contrary, you can highlight the neck line with a thread of a different color. So it will be even brighter and more beautiful!

Now let's move on to the handles. Let's take all the same cardboard and wind the thread of the same color as the main body of the amulet. The skeins should be half as many, otherwise the handles will turn out to be too plump. We fix the thread with a loop and tighten the knot.

For the "palms" take crimson yarn. Cut small pieces of thread in advance, 5-7 centimeters each, this should be enough to bandage the “handles”. Hide the tips into the body of the pupa using a pencil or wooden stick. "Handles" for the amulet are ready!

Divide the "body" in half to form a hole where we will insert the "handles". They need to be raised higher, pressing to the "head". This is how we got a “ghost” - not evil, but very cute!

Now we can move on to decorating our amulet. Take a piece of fabric, preferably new and not synthetic. We use a satin patch that was cut out in advance. You can knit an apron in openwork knitting, or take any beautiful piece of fabric.

We fold the fabric in half, we will fix it on the doll with a red thread. We chose the red thread not by chance, since it in itself is a strong amulet against many troubles and misfortunes. Wool is worn by many people, including celebrities and public figures.

We will tie our apron to the “waist”, fasten the thread with a bow at the back. Here we have such a beauty! A fabric with a canvas effect looks very beautiful and original - its ends can be “tousled” by stretching a few fibers along the edges and from below. Unfortunately, now there was no such rag at hand to demonstrate how it looks like in an example. You can use gauze, bandage, burlap or canvas for embroidery for this.

Let's move on to the hair. Usually, folk doll the amulet is always in a headscarf, she has no hairstyle. But why don't we give our doll real braids? We wind the hair on the cardboard, as before the "pens". Choose the thickness of the skein based on the type of thread. A hairstyle made of silk threads looks very beautiful, but nothing is made of bamboo yarn, as in the photo!

How to weave braids, any girl knows, regardless of age. When weaving, do not twist the yarn tightly, let the braids be lush and beautifully laid, like a model on the catwalk!

Braids, in order to better hold, can be glued to the “head” of the amulet with PVA glue or a transparent “moment”. You can’t sew on hair, because we remember that there should not be any sharp objects when assembling a talisman doll!

You can decorate the head of the chrysalis amulet as you please. Here you can use any decoration - beads or small beads collected on a thread, an elegant scarf from a piece of fabric, lace. We chose a wreath for our Beregini, knitted from threads of two colors - lettuce and pale orange. We knit the wreath in a loose knit so that the “pigtail” can stretch a little. We tie the ends of the wreath together, closing the circle.

To prevent the wreath from slipping off the pupa's hair, it can also be glued. Everything, Bereginya is ready! Now you can define it for a permanent place of residence - in the kitchen, in the bedroom, on the windowsill or right in the bouquet of flowers!

A self-made folk doll can be not only in the role of a talisman. It could be cool toy for a child, a keychain, a car pendant. On the basis of our master class, you can “wind up” a couple of doll-girls - a doll-boy. To do this, you need to divide the skirt into two parts and form legs from them. You can decorate the craft to your liking - stick short hair, tie a bandana, attach a foil saber to the side, etc.

Motanka can be made from pieces of matter. There are many recipes for its manufacture, but they are united by one common idea - the product should not have knots, except for one - in the abdomen, or rather, the navel. The knot in this area symbolizes the birth of life and everything new on Earth. Therefore, if you need to tie an apron, belt or other decor item on the doll, then try to make the knot on the tummy of your Beregini.
