Children often go missing in Moscow and the Moscow region. Typically, disappearances are associated with quarrels with parents or relatives. In Russia in general and in Moscow in particular, people regularly go missing, most often the elderly and children. In Moscow, 4 thousand people are now considered missing. Of these, 120 are minors. According to police estimates, an average of 4 thousand people disappear in the capital every year.

There are many organizations working in Russia to search for missing people. The most famous of them is “LisaAlert”. The organization “Search for Missing Children” unites 52 organizations in Russia that are involved in the search for children, as well as cases of their exploitation.

The Moscow government has also created a website to search for missing people. The site collects information about admissions to hospitals of those people who were unable to provide information about themselves and contact details of relatives. As a rule, these are children who simply do not know how to contact their relatives, people who are in serious medical condition, as well as people who simply cannot contact their relatives and are waiting for them to contact them.

We work in three areas. First of all, we are trying to prevent searches and carry out preventive work in schools. Secondly, we help the Ministry of Internal Affairs and others in searching for children. Thirdly, we try to work with children to prevent subsequent departures.

In addition, we are trying to combat the exploitation of children in begging. Our volunteers regularly go on raids to identify and detain beggars with children. We work in cooperation with the police, so if we find a beggar with a child, we immediately call the police. There is Article 151 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, but it does not work. We are trying to get the article amended to replace the word “involvement” with the word “use.” Then we hope that the law will really begin to work, and children will have a chance to be saved.

Since we all do this for free, we have a small staff of people who are ready to help us work in all these directions. Often this is 3-4 people, if you do not take into account the second point - sometimes thirty people participate in the search.

What needs to be done to keep children from leaving home?

We are developing a project for the interaction of all structures, so that school psychologists can take part in the issue of prevention and rehabilitation and solve problems locally, so this would be more effective.

I personally conducted a similar experience in one of the schools in Moscow, where it was revealed: two suicide attempts (one relapse, that is, repeated), two runners (children who regularly leave home), seven children who regularly drink alcohol (11-12 years old), two children using illegal smoking mixtures. In statistics, I am not talking about smoking; if we look at grades 7-11, then every 4th student smokes.

What advice would you give to parents? How to prevent such a situation?

Advice to parents has always been simple: pay attention to how your child’s mood changes and whether he is withdrawn. If you notice something wrong, if something has changed, then talk to your child. If you are afraid or cannot, then contact a school psychologist.

When relaxing in nature, do not lose sight of your child, do not think that if you are distracted for a few seconds, nothing will happen.

Where do the children go?

Most often, children go to their friends or acquaintances, much less often they stay to sleep in the entrance. As I already said, they leave because of resentment, lack of understanding and other reasons.

Are children often kidnapped?

Our center does not have information on the number of kidnappings in Russia; fortunately, we have not yet had any requests for hotline with a question about kidnapping. However, the department dealing with the issue of child exploitation is very interested in how women of non-Slavic appearance who beg for alms in crowded places get children of Slavic appearance.

How often are children found dead?

The number of children found dead is small: less than 10%, but in our practice, approximately 4% died as a result of violent acts.

Do children from poor, middle or rich families disappear more often?

The social stratum of missing children is different; it cannot be said that more often they run away from the disadvantaged or, on the contrary, from the prosperous. The only thing that can be said is that children from low-income and disadvantaged families are more often brought to administrative responsibility for drinking and using illegal substances.

How long does it usually take to search for children?

Most often, searches take from 10 to 72 hours. My longest search continues to this day; the young man disappeared on June 30, 2011 and to this day his whereabouts are unknown. We also have stories where children disappeared in 2008 and there is also no information about them.
