A wedding has always been an important event in the life of a Cossack and his bride. It’s not for nothing that they used to say in the old days – “to play a wedding.” This is a whole series of all kinds of rituals, customs, games and traditions, in which not only representatives of the two clans of the bride and groom, but also many residents of the village or village participated. We prepared for the celebration in advance. Parents usually chose the bride and groom, they decided everything important questions associated with the material part of the holiday. Before the wedding, the matchmakers met several times to finally agree on everything and choose a date. We walked for several days, and sometimes for a whole week. A wedding in the old days was a whole cycle of rituals that took place over several weeks and even months. The wedding itself included several stages that combined playful and practical purposes. As a rule, it all began with matchmaking. Matchmakers were chosen from the most experienced relatives. Good matchmakers had their own secrets and signs. The matchmaking was followed by a viewing party. This ritual was also called “housekeeping.” The matchmakers carefully inspected the home of the groom and his family, as they had to make sure that the bride would live in prosperity and comfort. Satisfied with the results of the show, the bride's parents set a day for the hand-to-hand ceremony. Hand-shaking, collusion, or solicitation—that was the name of the ritual—of public matchmaking. The bride's relatives and friends took part in the handshake. The groom had to recognize his betrothed among the girls, choose and kiss her. After this, the parents and the intended ones themselves “beat hands”, thereby giving consent to the marriage. They dressed the young future husband in everything new and beautiful.
