How to choose the right clothes for newborns. Choosing clothes for the baby. How to understand children's sizes. What clothes will your baby need?

Almost every woman immediately after confirming the fact of pregnancy goes to children's store. No, not to buy everything you need, but just... ask the price, look and imagine your future child. Get into the role. However, the closer the baby is due to be born, the more pressing the question arises: what clothes should I buy for my baby?

Take a size up

The average height of a newborn is 52 cm. However, this does not mean that all clothing for newborns should be this size. Firstly, the size range from the number is 56. Secondly, your baby may be larger. Thirdly, the suits should not sit closely on the child: there should be two to three centimeters of free space between his body and clothes. Finally, children grow very quickly, and within the first month the baby can add 4-6 cm. Therefore, it is best to choose a size of 62 cm.

Some manufacturers indicate on the labels as the size not the height of the child, but his age. For example, “designed for children 3-6 months old.” All babies are different (boys grow faster than girls), so it’s better to check with the seller what height a particular suit is designed for.

Size chart for children's clothing from 0 to 5 years

Age Height Size
0-1.5 months 50-56 cm size 56
1.5-3 months 56-62 cm size 62
3-6 months 62-68 cm size 68
6-9 months 68-74 cm size 74
9-12 months 74-80 cm size 80
1-1.5 years 80-86 cm size 86
1.5-2 years 86-92 cm size 92
2 years 92-98 cm size 98
3 years 98-104 cm size 104
4 years 104-110 cm size 110
5 years 110-116 cm size 116

Made from natural fabrics

Of course, clothes for newborns should be made only from natural fabrics. In principle, cotton is most often used for its production; only the density of the fabric is different. So, the thinnest stitch is stockinette and interlock. They are used to make underwear, pajamas and undershirts. More thick fabric(flannel, terry, footer, velor) is used to make thick caps, overalls, rompers.

However, you shouldn’t focus on naturalness either. The main thing is that the inner layer of the child’s clothing, which comes into contact with his delicate skin, is soft and hypoallergenic. On top of this you can wear, for example, a fleece suit.

Fewer details

All kinds of ribbons, frills, bows and other decorative elements are not safe for a child. While moving, they can choke him.

Avoid clothing that goes over your head. The child's cervical vertebrae are still very fragile. The ideal option would be buttons on the side or shoulder.

All seams on clothes that are adjacent to the baby's body must be on the outside. Otherwise, they should be soft and stitched with 100% cotton threads.

What to take?

Before you go shopping, decide for yourself whether you will swaddle your baby and whether you intend to use diapers all the time. If you swaddle your baby tightly and refuse disposable diapers, then for the first three months you will need mainly diapers, baby onesies and onesies. A lot. During the first months, the baby goes to the toilet every hour or more often. And after each such trip, he will most likely have to change a complete set of clothes. So stock up on the following set: at least 20 baby onesies, 20 rompers, 20 thin diapers, 20 thick diapers and several bonnets.

If you plan to wear diapers and occasionally swaddle (for example, to sleep), then you will need:

2-3 thin caps and 2-3 thick ones (classic hats, by the way, are uncomfortable: they expose the ears and slide over the eyes, which irritates the child);

Cotton overalls with buttons – 5-7 pieces (depending on your love for washing);

Scratch mittens – 2 pairs;

Bodysuit with short and long sleeve– 3 pieces each;

Warm socks – 1 pair;

Cotton socks – 2 pairs;

2 warm suits.

As for rompers and vests, suits with buttons are much more convenient. Nothing rides up and the child's back is always closed. Buying baby vests and rompers is, rather, a tribute to tradition. But in fact, they are collecting dust in the corner of the closet. It is better to switch to rompers and baby vests closer to six months, when the baby is crawling around the house. And in the first three months it is better to give preference to more comfortable clothes.

The same goes for diapers. Of course, you still need to buy five pieces. You can loosely swaddle the baby when he cannot calm down (some doctors believe that loose swaddling recreates in the baby’s mind the state when he was in the womb, and the uterus gently hugged him). You can also place the diaper on a sofa or other “non-children’s place” where the mother places the child. Plus, they are needed for examinations in clinics. But you definitely won’t need a lot of diapers. Better buy an extra suit.

Don't take too much

Don't buy everything you like in the store. Trust me, you won't need a mountain of clothes. If you use disposable diapers, then you will need one or two suits per day (newborn clothes should be changed every day).

All sorts of “adult” clothes (jeans, dresses, sweaters) are also a waste of money. At home, you are unlikely to dress your baby in a weekend suit, and there is practically nowhere to go with such a baby in the first three months. So leave these acquisitions for a later period. Often such outfits are uncomfortable for the baby. And for going to the clinic or visiting, it is better to choose a beautiful soft jumpsuit.

And don’t forget: they will definitely give you a bunch of clothes. Grandparents, aunts and nephews will not be able to pass by children's stores. Therefore, if you do not want any unpleasant surprises, tell us in advance what you need to buy.

And remember, a newborn baby doesn’t care what he looks like. He should be warm and comfortable. Everything else is mom’s whims.

What should winter clothing be for infants? How not to turn long walks into torture for your baby? What to look for? Let's figure it out together.

Choosing a model

Envelope

It doesn't take much effort to wrap your baby in an envelope. He put it on a horizontal surface - unfastened it (zipper or buttons) - placed the child - fastened it. There will be no air in the envelope, it will not twitch, since the baby in it is completely covered - except for the face. However, this same fact greatly limits the possibility of his movements.

The disadvantages of envelopes include the impracticality of purchasing - precisely as winter clothing, and not as a blanket substitute, they can rarely be used for more than one season. Transformable envelopes can be used longer, up to a 1.5-2 year old child, transforming from a warm sleeping bag into a full-fledged overalls. An intermediate option is an envelope with handles. An excellent option for those who do not yet walk, but no longer tolerate restrictions in their movements.

Overalls

Unlike envelopes, the overalls do not restrict the baby's movements. For the same reason, it is a little more difficult to dress a baby in it, especially when he is not in the mood. However, any mother will learn to cope with the quest “get into the right pant leg and then into the sleeve” after a couple of “trainings”. For those children who do not yet walk, but only lie and sit in a stroller, the overalls may have booties and mittens that turn away. For those who have already tried on boots, in order to prevent the trouser leg from riding up, it is convenient if the model has straps (elastic holders).

A jumpsuit is considered slightly warmer than a separate set with the same amount of insulation. The reason is that there is no connection between the top and bottom, which means warm air moves freely inside.

Separate kit

The main difference between jacket and pants sets and overalls, as you might guess, is that they are, in fact, separate. This means that the process of “dressing” may take a little longer. Yes, and there is a possibility, for example, that while taking “snow baths” or mastering the skills of crawling over rough terrain in such a winter suit, the baby is more likely to get wet or freeze if the jacket is pulled up.

On the other hand, some mothers note that separate sets are more convenient if necessary, to go with the child, for example, to the store. To keep your baby warm, you can easily take off his jacket.

Choosing insulation

Natural insulation materials

Feather.

It is better to choose clothes with such insulation for newborns or as an additional set. Down always goes in combination with feathers, and its ratio is important. It is considered ideal for the thermal protection of a child to contain 80% down and 20% feather. For the winter, it is better to choose clothes made from eider and goose feathers.

Advantages of insulation:

  • easy;
  • breathing;
  • restores its shape well after mechanical compression;
  • very warm, often does not require any underwear other than a cotton T-shirt (up to -25 C).

Disadvantages of insulation:

  • may cause allergies,
  • often the feather comes out through the outer fabric and lining;
  • cannot be washed or can be washed, but very rarely and with by special means;
  • absorbs moisture well and dries for a long time;
  • down clothes are quite bulky and uncomfortable to walk in;
  • During wet weather, a greenhouse effect may occur and the child will overheat

Sheepskin (sheep's wool).

A popular insulation material dating back to the times of our grandmothers. Warms well, but is quite heavy. It is most often used in the manufacture of baby envelopes and overalls for children under 1 year of age. There are options for winter sets with a removable “lining” made of sheep wool.

Advantages of insulation:

  • practically does not cause allergies (if processed well);
  • wear-resistant;
  • durable;
  • holds heat well (up to -25 C).

Disadvantages of insulation:

  • requires special care (usually dry cleaning),
  • heavy,
  • absorbs moisture, takes a long time to dry, and becomes deformed.

Artificial insulation

As a rule, the tag of a product with artificial insulation will say 100% polyester. However, they may have very different trade names. The “oldest” and most famous synthetic insulation is synthetic winterizer. However, now it is considered not entirely environmentally friendly, heavy, and also “cold” - it “warms” at a temperature not lower than -10 C. It is used, as a rule, in cheap “no-name” products.

Among the modern trade names of artificial insulation materials that are trustworthy:

  • holofiber;
  • isosoft;
  • Thinsulate;
  • hollophile;
  • Polarguard;
  • thermofab;
  • holophane;
  • topsfill

Their advantages:

  • retain heat well (some types - up to -40 C);
  • lungs;
  • hypoallergenic;
  • easy to care for

Their disadvantages:

When choosing outerwear for a baby with artificial insulation, you should pay attention to its density or how many grams a square meter of insulation will weigh. This information may be indicated on the tag, posted on the manufacturer's website, or known to the seller. It allows you to navigate approximately temperature conditions clothing socks.

  • 80-100 g/m2 - up to -5 C;
  • 100-140 g/m2 - from +5 C to -10 C;
  • 140-200 g/m2 - from -5 C to -20 C;
  • 200-400 g/m2 - from -10 C to -30 C.

At the same time, there is always more insulation in jackets than in the pants that come with them.

Is a membrane needed?

The membrane is not insulation. This is a special synthetic thin film that is attached to the surface of the fabric, or a special impregnation. The membrane is widely used in the manufacture of children's winter clothing. As a rule, manufacturers have similar models marked tec or tex. However, it makes sense to buy such products when the child is already actively moving, that is, walking and running.

It perfectly protects from wind and moisture, preventing the child’s body from sweating and becoming overcooled, since cold air from the outside does not penetrate inside, and the overheated and humid air from the inside is expelled out through special pores of the material. But if the baby lies or sits in a stroller and does not move, dressed in a membrane overall, he may be cold.

However, some manufacturers use membrane fabrics in combination with modern synthetic insulation. Such products are quite suitable for infants to wear in winter.

What else should you pay attention to?

For water resistance and breathability

Besides aesthetic beauty external material, for the comfort of the baby and the peace of mind of the mother, its ability not to get wet and allow steam to pass through is important.

How well a particular garment copes with moisture can be judged by the waterproof/waterproof ratings sometimes found on product tags. They are determined by the height of the water column in millimeters, the pressure of which the material can withstand for 24 hours without getting wet.

For reference:

  • 1000-1500 mm is an unremarkable raincoat fabric that does not have special waterproof properties or special treatment. As a rule, it is not indicated on the tags. And if something like this is worth it, then it’s just a marketing ploy;
  • 1500-3000 mm - slightly impregnated fabric that can withstand walking in frost or snow, but will get wet when lying in snowdrifts;
  • 3000-5000 mm - according to accepted standards, starting with these numbers, they speak of water resistance. A child wearing clothes made of such fabric can safely storm snow barriers and unfrozen puddles;
  • 5000-10000 mm and above - a high degree of protection against water.

Vapor or air permeability (VTR), that is, the ability of a fabric to allow evaporation to pass through itself over a period of time, is measured in grams/m2/day. The “report” begins at approximately 1000 grams/m2/day. A good level is 5000 grams/m2/day. The higher the indicator, the better, but not for infants lying or sitting in a stroller. For them, 1000-1500 grams/m2/day will be optimal, provided there is a large amount of insulation in their clothes.

Perhaps the most “reliable” in terms of protection from water and wind, as well as steam transmission, are membrane fabrics, which were discussed above. But not only. For example, Teflon® coated fabrics. They, in the strict sense of the word, are not membrane, but have excellent moisture and dirt resistance.

For wear resistance

Relevant for winter clothes for those children who are starting to walk or have already mastered this skill. They have the most vulnerable places for abrasion and holes - their knees and butt. It is better if they are strengthened. Or the bottom of the set/overalls is made of thicker material. For example, from Condura (Cordura). It is a thick nylon fabric with a polyurethane coating. Very durable and water-repellent. Products with the already mentioned Teflon impregnation also boast of increased wear resistance.

On clasps

They should be comfortable, durable and few in number. According to reviews from many mothers, the combination of zippers and buttons is ideal for infants.

On the lining of the product

If it is cotton, it should have a slight allowance and sag, in case of possible shrinkage during washing. It is also desirable that in those places where the child’s skin may come into contact with clothing - collar, cuffs - the material is soft, not irritating or rubbing. Cotton is better. Soft polyester is also a good option.

For the absence/presence of decorative elements

Excessive decor can not only cause inconvenience when dressing/undressing a baby, but can also be dangerous. For example, a baby may put one of its elements in his mouth and choke.

The most comfortable clothes for newborns Many parents collect a “dowry” for their babies in advance. This is convenient, because they save themselves from unnecessary fuss after. But the disadvantage of such purchases is that when choosing clothes for our first child, before his birth, we are guided by emotions and the “like or dislike” principle, but often forget about convenience, practicality and expediency. To avoid unnecessary purchases, let's try to make a list of necessary things.

For me it was something I couldn't do without. A slip is a vest combined with rompers, like a jumpsuit.. They are also called “little men”. Why are they convenient?

    — The slip never slips and does not expose the baby’s back; it does not have an elastic band that seals on the tummy.
    - Moms can easily put it on even the little ones, because... there is no need to do it over your head. The slips are fastened along the entire body in the middle or on the side with buttons, and the fasteners diverge along the legs.
    — Some models for newborns have one-piece scratch mittens.

What should you pay attention to? First of all, on the quality of the fabric and the percentage of synthetics. The fabric should be natural and pleasant to the touch. No bright marks or paint smell. Basically, all slips are fastened with buttons. Check them, they should be easy to fasten and unfasten. You should also pay attention to how and where they are located, whether they will put pressure and cause discomfort.

Which slip and how to choose?

All clothing should be made from natural fabrics. There are slips with fused legs, like in sliders. They are very comfortable, but newborns outgrow them quickly, and it happens that such a suit becomes small after just a week, so there is no point in purchasing several units of the same size. Models without socks for newborns are not very comfortable, but for babies from 2 to 3 months they are suitable. If you purchase a slip with “mittens”, then a more practical option is when the scratches are merged only on one side, i.e., if they are not necessary, then they become cuffs. There are slips made of velor fabric. This is an insulated demi-season option. Of course, they are designed to be worn over a cotton bodysuit, slip or suit. When making a choice in favor of a specific model, consider seasonality.

In my opinion, a slip is a thing that can be purchased for growth. You will use them for a long time and with pleasure. At first, it doesn’t make sense to buy more than 5-6 pieces, but summer period 2-3 thin ones will be enough. Maybe some will find this not enough, but you will always have time to buy more. From my own experience, I can say that a newborn does not need a lot of clothes. Only during that period I, like many women, didn’t think so, but later we didn’t even have time to wear some things. The only thing that saved me was that I made sure that the sizes of numerous bodysuits and slips were different, albeit with a difference of 1-2 centimeters, but still. When choosing clothes for newborns, pay attention to the age restrictions for the little ones - from 0 to 3.

Clothes that, thanks to their convenience and practicality, have replaced baby vests. By appearance the bodysuit is somewhat reminiscent of an adjacent swimsuit. The choice of models is large - with short or long sleeves, fasteners along the entire length or without, etc. Let's figure out which ones are suitable for a newborn?

    — The main condition is the naturalness of the fabric and good quality.
    — For newborns the most convenient model- with buttons along the entire length. It is completely unfastened, so it is easy to put on the baby.
    — At 2-3 months, when the baby grows a little, bodysuits with clasps on the shoulder will be just right. They are put on over the head, the buttons are fixed on the shoulder and between the legs. The model is convenient because if there is a need to change a diaper, you do not need to take off your clothes completely. You just unfasten the bottom of the bodysuit and change your baby's clothes.
    — When choosing clothes for infants, the issue of seasonality is very important. For example, there are summer bodysuits made from thin cotton, with short sleeve or without it. In hot weather, this model is simply irreplaceable. There are warm options, with a long neck, like a turtleneck, designed for older children. I don’t see the point in buying warm bodysuits for newborns, because then you have to think about what to put on their legs. Then better slip, it has both legs and arms.
    — Bodysuits with two buttons on the back are more suitable for children who can sit, from 6 months and older. The same applies to models with clasps on hangers.

How many bodysuits will a newborn need? If the baby was born in the warm season, then in my opinion, from 5 pieces or more. As with slips, do not buy all models in the same size. A small “gap” will not be superfluous. As for bodysuits for the cold season, for newborns this is not essential clothing. Give preference to slips.

Suits

For children under three months old, it is better not to buy clothes that are worn over the head. Keep this in mind when choosing suits, dresses and other beauty for newborns. Is there any point in dressing like this? As a rule, mothers try to dress up their babies in this way for a trip to the clinic, to grandma's, to a bride's party or for a photo shoot. Some manufacturers offer suits specifically for discharge from the hospital. Basically they consist of three or more units - rompers, blouses with scratches or small dress and hats. Some can be purchased with envelopes to match the color of the suit. In general, there are many options. How many suits will a newborn need? Judge for yourself. Newborns grow instantly, and mothers put on what's comfortable first. Of course, suits are beautiful and not all of them are uncomfortable, so be guided by your financial capabilities.

The birth of a baby is absolutely new stage in the lives of parents. It opens not only with positive emotions and pleasant chores, but also with many questions, exciting mothers and dad. One of them is how much clothing a newborn needs. Little children grow very quickly, so you should take care of purchasing everything you need in advance. In this article we will tell you in detail about what your baby needs to buy and in what quantity.

How to dress a baby in the maternity hospital

A newborn will need his first clothes in the maternity hospital, and it is better to start shopping after the 25th week of pregnancy. It is recommended to pack your belongings in bags, as most maternity hospitals do not allow travel bags. Label each package with a bright marker, indicating what and how much it contains.

All packages must be shown to your husband or one of your close relatives. Tell them exactly what will need to be brought before and after the birth, and what will be needed for discharge. Excited about the arrival of a baby, mothers often strive to purchase absolutely everything that is designed for newborn babies. When planning how much clothing a newborn needs in the maternity hospital, it is enough to include these things in the list:

  1. Diapers. To the maternity hospital you will need to take one pack of the smallest diapers (for children up to 4 kg). In case the baby is born large, buy a few more, but bigger size(up to 6 kg). It is enough to take only a couple of pieces to the delivery room. The rest of the pack is taken to the ward where you will remain until discharge.
  2. flannelette and calico. Even if you don't plan to swaddle your baby, it's still worth bringing a few swaddles with you. They can be used as bedding.
  3. . You will need to take two pairs of sliders to the delivery room. Take a few more sets to your room. Usually mothers take 2 pairs for each day. You can buy it with a wide elastic band or with clasps on the shoulders. It is better to purchase both models at once, so you can later understand which clothes are more comfortable.
  4. Baby undershirts They take it at the rate of using one per day. Prepare one for the delivery room, four for the ward. This is the minimum quantity, and how many pieces you will take is up to you to decide.
  5. . For the maternity hospital, it is enough to take three pieces.
  6. "Little people." This clothing is very comfortable for cool periods. For the first time, two pieces will be enough for you. If you take baby vests and onesies to the maternity hospital, the “men” will not be useful to you.
  7. . Newborns have not yet developed thermoregulation, so their feet are always cold. You should definitely take several pairs of socks to the maternity hospital: one for the delivery room, two more for the ward.
  8. . Take three of these to the maternity hospital. One of them will be useful in the delivery room, two - in the ward.
  9. Blanket. When choosing material, consider the time of year. The blanket should be warm enough for the baby.
  10. Scratches. They are put on the hands of a newborn so that he does not accidentally injure himself.

What does a newborn need for discharge?

When wondering how much clothing a newborn needs, don't forget to consider the baby envelope. It is convenient to use for swaddling upon discharge from the hospital. Manufacturers offer us a huge range of such blankets, differing in color, material, and swaddling method. In winter, an envelope can be useful as an alternative to overalls.

Another advantage of the envelope is that it can easily be used as a blanket. Dense fur - good for winter walks, thin - for summer. In stores you can find a wide selection of knitted, fur, and fleece products.

When purchasing an envelope for a newborn, check the quality of the models presented. They should have neat seams and a minimum of fasteners. Choose gentle colors that are pleasing to the eye: blue, pink, pastel, white.

In stores you can find envelopes where the top part is made in the form of a blouse, and the bottom has a standard shape. The model is convenient because the baby's hands are free in it. There is also plenty of room at the bottom to move your legs.

How much clothes does a newborn need for the first time?

How much and what kind of clothes should a newborn buy in the summer? Here full list things for daily wear. However, it is worth considering that during the cold period (winter, autumn) the baby will need warmer clothes:

  • . This is a very comfortable type of clothing for babies, which has gained great popularity among mothers. The bodysuits do not ride up, allow the child to move his arms and legs freely and make it much easier to put the baby to sleep. For the summer, you can purchase body T-shirts, body T-shirts or long-sleeved models. Take 2-3 pieces of each type. Bodysuits that have fasteners in the center or in the shoulder area are considered more comfortable.

  • Baby vests. This clothing is more familiar for babies, and most parents prefer it. Cotton models absorb moisture well and do not irritate the baby's skin. Make sure that such shirts do not have any additional elements: ties, buttons, snaps, as all of them can rub the baby’s delicate skin. Decide for yourself how many baby vests to buy for a newborn for the summer. Usually two or three pieces are enough.

  • . Pants with straps are more comfortable. Decide for yourself how much of this type of clothing a newborn baby needs. Usually buy at least four models from thin fabric and four from dense.

  • . It is enough to buy three lightweight models and two warm overalls.

  • Although in summer it is usually quite hot weather, a newborn needs thin ones. It is enough to buy two or three pairs.
  • . In summer it is necessary to protect the baby's head from the wind and sun rays. Usually buy two or three models made of lightweight fabric.

This set will be enough to make your baby feel comfortable in the hot summer. When choosing how much and what clothes to buy for a newborn, consider the convenience of each product. Buy models made from quality materials such as cotton and jersey. It is permissible to choose clothes from a mixture of natural silk and wool. It's better not to buy synthetic ones. Also avoid synthetic decor, large patterns with dense backing, and pockets. All these elements make the clothes multi-layered, and the baby will be hot in them.

You can buy special suits for walking outside. When choosing them, take into account the temperature outside the window and how your baby feels. For warm weather (from +20 °C), you can dress your child in clothes made of thin fabric; for cooler weather, warmer sets are suitable.

in autumn Clothing for small children should be selected taking into account the coming cold weather. Gradually you can look for warmer sets for indoors and outdoors. In addition to the basic set of things you will need to purchase:

  • . This is a warm suit that can be purchased for a newborn at the beginning of autumn, when the weather is still warm outside. Under such a jumpsuit it is convenient to wear a vest or bodysuit made of light fabric.

  • Thin blanket. When thinking about how much clothes a newborn needs to buy in the fall, don’t forget about such a standard item as a blanket. You can cover your child with it during walks and at home. A simple product can replace a transforming envelope or a warm suit. Usually the blanket is made of padding polyester with terry lining. These materials are not very warm, so they are perfect for the first half of autumn.
  • Knitted hat with ties will be indispensable for autumn walks.

If your child was born in the fall, then overalls need to be purchased from size 62. If you want your baby to carry it until the end of autumn, feel free to take size 68 overalls. Suitable for blouses and rompers minimum dimensions(until 56th).

IN winter period You can no longer get by with just one set of clothes. You will need both insulated suits for the cold street, and light, thin things for a comfortable stay at home. In general, the wardrobe of a baby born in winter should be larger than that of “summer” children.

How much and what kind of clothing is needed for a newborn in winter:

  • Slips– a very popular type of children's clothing for cold weather winter period. They are convenient to wear as under insulated clothing. street clothes, and at home. They are especially relevant for cool rooms. You can't go wrong if you buy 6-7 sets for your newborn at once. Three of them should be made of thin fabric, the rest should be warm, flannelette.
  • Children's bodysuits- These are special clothes for babies. The product completely covers the baby's body and is fastened at the bottom. In stores you can find body T-shirts, body T-shirts, and long-sleeve models. In winter, it is convenient to wear a bodysuit under a slip or overalls. For a newborn baby, 2-3 pieces with sleeves of different lengths will be enough.
  • Romper with blouses can serve as an excellent replacement for slips. Sweatshirts with rivets in the center or with a wrap on the side are considered more comfortable. Decide how many sets of such clothes a newborn needs based on your convenience. For example, you can purchase 3-4 pieces of rompers (materials are footer and knitwear) and 2-3 blouses.
  • cap needed both for the street and for the home (after bathing). Caps with ties are considered more convenient, as they do not slip off and do not interfere with the baby. One knitted hat will be enough.
  • Warm socks made of wool or fleece. They are usually worn over slips. This way the baby's feet always remain warm. You will need two pairs of these socks.
  • Diapers. In winter, diapers are needed all day and night. But to avoid the appearance of diaper rash on a child’s skin, you need to remove it for a while. You can also use various baby creams and powders for diaper rash. To avoid making a mistake when choosing diapers, first buy your newborn one each from several manufacturers. This way you can empirically determine which option is better.

When your baby is at home, monitor the room temperature. Too high can even harm the child's health. The optimal option is +22 °C. The set of clothes described above is designed specifically for such conditions.

Also don't forget about fresh air. Even in winter you need to do at least one ventilation in the room. If you use heaters, you need to ensure sufficient air humidification. To do this, you can purchase a humidifier or use improvised means: place a container of water or cover the battery with a damp cloth.

How much and what kind of clothing does a newborn need for winter walks:

  • Fleece walking overalls, which is put on the slip. An insulated winter overall or envelope is worn over it. One such jumpsuit will be enough.

  • Warm winter overalls. This item is a must have in every child's wardrobe. Select the thickness of the suit individually, depending on how many degrees it is outside the window. So, for example, for warmer latitudes the amount of insulation in it should be about 180–200 g/m2. For cold winters, insulation of about 300 g/m2 is suitable. You can also purchase a transforming jumpsuit for winter.

  • Winter hat. It should be warm and soft. It is advisable to choose a product made from natural material. If you use wool models, wear a knitted cap down.
  • Blanket or rug. Regardless of how much clothing is worn, in cold weather a newborn should be additionally insulated with a thick blanket or blanket. You need to monitor how many degrees it is outside. A blanket will be needed at -20...-25 °C, as well as in strong and gusty winds.

Dressing your baby in sweaters and blouses that don't unfasten is very inconvenient. It’s better to choose things with fasteners that you can put on without worrying your little one too much. Knitted items should be finely knitted so that fingers do not get tangled. Avoid clothes with a lot of ribbons, ties and other decorations, as they can get into the child's mouth.

Let's move on to the question of how much clothing a newborn needs for the first time in the spring. For this time of year you do not need to buy many sets of warm outerwear, since by the next cold season (autumn) the baby will already have grown up.

If the baby was born in the spring, then you need to purchase not only things for the spring season, but also start planning how much clothes the newborn will need in the summer. For babies born in early spring, you will also need warm clothes for walking. It is also worth considering that in apartments the heating is turned off quite early, and the house may be cool for some time. For this case, it is worth purchasing a couple of sets of warm home clothes.

Newborn babies have very delicate and sensitive skin. Therefore, to avoid skin irritation, use only natural fabrics in clothing. For example, flannel, terry, cotton, satin stitch and interlock. Try to choose spacious models that will not fit tightly to the body.

Clothing that comes into contact with the skin should not have internal seams so as not to irritate or chafe it. The rest of the items put on top can be sewn in the usual way. It is better that all the threads are made of natural cotton.

When determining how much and what clothes your newborn needs, consider your baby's comfort. For example, pants with a tight elastic band should definitely be excluded. The most comfortable models are those with a wide, loose elastic band.

You should only buy children's clothing from trusted sellers whose products are of good quality. If you purchase items made in China, make sure they do not have an unpleasant chemical smell. Often, manufacturers of inexpensive clothing do not comply with important safety standards. Therefore, approach the issue of choosing products with maximum responsibility.

The first clothes should not be very bright or contrasting. Such things negatively affect the baby’s psyche, the condition of his skin and health. Choose sets for your newborn in soft, pastel colors.

If you are not afraid of bright colored things, be careful about the quality of the fabric you choose. If low-quality dye is used in production, clothes can harm the health of the child. In addition, bad paint will wash out almost immediately and the product will become dull.

How to care for newborn clothes

No matter how many clothes you buy for a newborn up to one year old, they need to be washed as often as possible. To do this, use special children's products (soap or powders). Wash items only in hot water (approximate temperature +90 °C).

You can add conditioner to your wash. However, make sure that it is intended specifically for children's clothing. Such products have a safe chemical composition.

Washed items must be ironed. Impact high temperatures kills bacteria remaining in clothes.

Before putting clothes on your baby, cut off all tags and paper labels. They can irritate and chafe your baby's skin.

Waiting for a new member to appear in the family is always fraught with a lot of hassle, especially if the “H” hour is just around the corner. In the string of questions that arise, not the least is the problem of things for the baby. What clothes are needed and how much is needed for a newborn; what things you need to take with you to the maternity hospital; what should the baby sleep in and what should he wear for walking; what to wear on the baby for the baptism ceremony - we will talk about all this in the article.

What for experienced mothers clear and understandable, for those acquiring this status for the first time results in a large number of questions: what clothes should a newborn buy in advance, and what should be put off until later? late date? What size should this or that thing for newborns be and what to look for when choosing children's clothing, etc., etc. Moreover, when visiting a store, your head is simply spinning from its diversity and assortment.

In order to do everything “according to the mind”, so that these chores are pleasant and do not become another reason to test your nervous system, try to plan this event. This plan can consist of answers to two questions: “when” and “what”. Let's try to figure out when you should buy clothes and what is necessary for newborns first. These questions will not be difficult to answer if you consider that usually the first year of their life is divided into three stages:

  • 0-3 months,
  • 3-6 months,
  • 6-12 months.

Each period corresponds to certain clothing sizes. It follows from this that before the baby is born, it is advisable to buy things that he will need before three months. At this age, the baby’s wardrobe consists of a few things:

  • simple (thin) and warm undershirts (6);
  • sliders (4-5);
  • flannel diapers (6);
  • bodysuit with and without sleeves (4);
  • slip overalls (2-3);
  • caps (2);
  • anti-scratch.

You can buy all the clothes a newborn needs in parts or as a set. It should be noted that the proposed list is sufficient for a child if he is born in the warm season. If it is winter, you should add to the above:

  • warm pants,
  • blouse,
  • cap,
  • socks.

This is quite enough. After all, a child grows very quickly during this period, so there is no need to purchase something that may later turn out to be simply unclaimed.

When going for a walk, dress yourself first. Otherwise, a previously collected child may sweat while waiting for you, which is not good.

Things that the baby will need in the second and third stages of life up to one year can be purchased later. After all, up to three months, everything is more or less clear with sizes: the standard height for this age is 56-62 cm. Size tables can be found on our website. Then it all depends on how large or small your child will be and how he will gain weight. Therefore, it is not possible to predict what size he will need in 4-12 months.

So, we’ve sorted out the types and quantities of clothing for newborns. Now you need to decide how to choose it, what to look for when buying clothes for a newborn. Here you need to follow a few simple but very important rules:

  • all clothing should be made only from natural fabrics,
  • it must match the size of the baby;
  • he should feel comfortable and comfortable in it.

Clothes for low birth weight newborns

Premature newborns are babies born ahead of schedule. Typically, their difference from their full-term “brothers” is their lighter weight. This means that clothes intended for low birth weight newborns will simply be smaller in size. Manufacturers of children's clothing take care of our fellow citizens. They even have their own scale of indicators, according to which you can choose the sizes for your little miracle.

The table below shows the clothing sizes for premature newborns:

The size of the hat for such babies can also be selected using a special table.

Clothes for newborns in the maternity hospital

In order for newborns to feel comfortable during their stay in the maternity hospital, mothers should take care of clothes for them even before birth. You should take with you:

  • five to seven thin and three to five flannelette diapers;
  • four or five vests, rompers, blouses, caps;
  • three bodysuits;
  • two or three pairs of socks and scratches.

Blouses and rompers can be replaced with human overalls, of which you will need eight to ten pieces. In addition to the above clothes, you also need one or two terry soft towels and a blanket. This amount of clothing will be enough for a newborn for the first time. To be discharged from the maternity hospital in the summer, you should prepare and bring a jacket, rompers, a cap, a vest and an insulated envelope.

If the child was born in winter, a warm set and an envelope made of sheepskin or other warm material should be added to the set of clothes listed above. Of course, the proposed clothing is not a guide to mandatory performance. You can add or remove something, replace something with its analogue.

Christening clothes for newborns

From time immemorial, the first most important event in the life of a baby (of course, after the very fact of birth) was his baptism. Gradually in our country this was replaced by a ceremonial discharge from the maternity hospital. Fortunately, today this tradition is returning. That's why it appeared the new kind clothes for newborns - baptismal. These include:

  • traditional christening shirts,
  • christening dresses for girls,
  • special fancy suits for boys,
  • berets or hats,
  • headbands.

Newborn sleepwear

Babies usually sleep in the same clothes they wear when they are awake. Therefore, it would be incorrect to talk about any special type of sleepwear for a newborn. The only thing you should pay attention to when putting your baby to sleep at night is that the rompers, shirts, and undershirts are as comfortable and of high quality as possible. They should not:

  • restrict the baby's movements;
  • irritate his skin;
  • be too warm (so that the baby does not overheat) or too light (so that he does not freeze).
